A little more than 24 years ago, I decided to open Edwin Paul Salon in Grosse Pointe. I had worked for just about every salon in the area, and it was clear that even those who said they were the best were not close to my standards.

Most were unclean, needing new paint, carpet and better equipment. Their staff members were uncontrolled and unprofessional, in desperate need of management. Their training was lacking, ranging from the untrained to those using outdated skills and techniques. And yet, these salons still charged their clients high prices without any investments in education or infrastructure.

I quickly learned why hairdressers were viewed so poorly.

And I decided to do  better... launching a salon that exceeds expectations.

Edwin Paul stylists represent the elite of the field, because of our higher standards:

*We are the only salon in Michigan where new stylists must commit to 4,000 hours of training phase, they are tested on everything from communication and interpersonal skills to practical techniques. They are only permitted to begin building a clientele after completion of testing.

*Price levels are earned, based on productivity, commitment to education, and time on the job. Unlike other stylists, who can randomly raise prices, our stylists must agree to our requirements. Prices must be earned. Performance is reviewed quarterly in all areas. Lateness, poor service, gossip or negative attitudes are not acceptable. All employees promise to adhere to these standards in writing, knowing they will be held accountable to uphold the Edwin Paul philosophy.

Because this salon maintains high standards and performance values, we also reward our staff for their commitment to excellence. They enjoy paid vacations, a 401-K retirement plan, education perks, benefits, regular cash incentives, and the pride of being part of the best salon in Michigan.

Our facilities are state-of-the art and attractive, creating a wonderful environment for clients and staff. Our salon is cleaned daily, and deep cleaning is done twice weekly. Our storefront has won 14 beautification awards, thank to the beautifully maintained garden through the spring, summer and fall.

We want the best for our clients, so we network with doctors for hair replacement, dental and cosmetic procedures. We offer the best lines of hair care products for retail in our store.

Edwin Paul is also active in the community, annually donating for our success.

Only one out of 100 salons in the world operate at the Edwin Paul level. And I am sure we are the only salon in Michigan meeting and exceed our high standards.
